To solve ‘this app is damaged’ error, simply open Terminal from Launchpad and enter the following command. Sudo spctl -master-disable Enter your password and you’re done. I started getting this on many files from.dmg to.jpg files after I migrated from my 2009 iMac 27' to a new iMac Pro (8 core 2TB SSD). All JPGs would generate previews and thumbnails but a double click soluble generate the 'is damaged and can't be opened' dialog with a recommendation to delete the file.

The process for verifying disk images changed under Mac OS X 10.4.9 and later, becoming more stringent. As as result, many users are receiving the message 'The disk image you are opening may be damaged and could damage your system' when attempting to mount previously functional disk images. As described by one MacFixIt reader'I have been burning data onto DVDs in the form of Disk Images in the (possibly mistaken) belief that it will either protect the files from corruption or at least detect corruption if it occurs. A few days ago I opened one of these.dmgs which I had copied onto my Hard Drive. I had opened this.dmg several times before, but on this occasion, during the verification, a warning message appeared with these dreaded words 'The disk image you are opening may be damaged and could damage your system'. Thinking that the file had become corrupted, I got out the original DVD and received the same message. I went ahead and opened it and everything appeared perfect.
Obviously the chances of 2 separate copies of a.dmg becoming simultaneously damaged is statistically almost impossible. I then realised that I had burned the DVD.dmg (and used it) on OSX 10.4.8 and now I was using it on OSX 10.4.10.'

According to Apple, Mac OS X 's ability to 'detect damaged or corrupted disk images before mounting them' was improved in 10.4.9, resulting in the aforementioned alert message. The company says one potential fix is to make a copy of the disk image, then open it in Disk Utility (located in /Applications/Utilities) and click the 'Repair' button. Alternatively, if you have backed up copies of the files on the disk image, you can create a new disk image and copy the files to it as described in Knowledge Base article.Feedback?.Resources.
